A. Lange & Söhne releases two new 40mm Saxonia Thin models with glossy black onyx dials.
Available in the brand’s proprietary Honeygold alloy and in platinum, each is paired with a gloss black alligator strap with a case-metal-matching pin buckle.
Production is limited to 200 pieces for each metal.

Stone dials continue to be on trend, it seems, but leave it to A. Lange & Söhne to do it like no one else. With their 2025 having been mostly focused on complicated models (except for the downsized 34mm 1815 models), it is welcome news to see some fresh time-only models from the esteemed German watchmaker.

ALS 211 052 B01 Saxonia Thin 2025

The Saxonia collection is focused on technical and aesthetic perfection, according to the brand, and these new models do not disappoint, featuring glossy onyx dials that serve as a backdrop to the minimalist dial design. While white and silver dials may be the more appropriate choice for formal dinners and business meetings, these striking black dials are ready for a party.

ALS ST Onyx PT

The glossy onyx face of the dial is done over a .925 silver dial plate, with baton indices for the hour markers. The lack of any running seconds or a minute track keeps the focus on the hours and minutes, seemingly emphasising that accurate time reading is not the most important task when wearing this watch. For the Honeygold model, the hands and indices are also done in the proprietary alloy, offering a warm contrast to the stark black dial. The platinum version features rhodium-plated 18k white gold hands and indices, which read as cool, austere, and purposeful with its stark contrast.

ALS ST Onyx Movement 1

The case of the Saxonia Thin consists of three parts, and for this reference measures 40mm in diameter and 6.2mm thick. Both versions come with a glossy black alligator strap with pin buckles matching the case material. Inside is the A. Lange & Söhne manufacture calibre L093.1, sporting a pleasant expanse of all the hand-finished German silver goodness we come to expect from A. Lange & Söhne. The movement consists of 167 parts, 21 jewels, operates at 21,600 bph, measures 28mm in diameter and 2.9mm thick, has a 72-hour power reserve, and can be admired through a sapphire case back.

Closing thoughts

ALS ST Onyx Balance Cock

My Porsche-phile tendencies make me inclined to love just about anything over-engineered and well-made from Germany, but the Saxonia’s design language does speak to me more than other Lange models, even the Lange 1, and these two models are no different. The inky black dial, while not Vantablack, does appear like it could be none more black, drawing you in to the dark abyss. Even though this is a thin dress watch, I think one of the best aspects of A. Lange & Söhne watches is that (to me at least) they can be worn with just about anything, as the strong lug profile gives them enough presence to be worn casually.

I do wish it was slightly smaller, but that’s just my preference. A. Lange & Söhne does occasionally oblige in giving us smaller versions of brand favourites, especially with the smaller Little Lange 1. The deep black dial is likely the reason for the larger case, as the dark dial shrinks the visual weight of the watch compared to a lighter colored dial. I do think I’m partial to the Honeygold version, but both absolutely rule. I would not be surprised if we see this on some red carpets coming up, because these do appear to be show-stoppers…
