Former Hull KR and Wigan Warriors man Blake Green has ‘little or no interest’ in the Castleford Tigers head coach job, according to reports down under.
Green is one of the names who has been linked with the vacancy at The Jungle in the two and a half weeks that have passed since Danny McGuire was sacked by the club. Director of rugby Chris Chester has made it clear that he is looking down under for a new head coach and this week he has held interviews for the job, with just one candidate being UK-based.
However, it seems as though Newcastle Knights assistant Green isn’t one of those names in the running with the Newcastle Herald dismissing suggestions he could make the switch to West Yorkshire.
In a news round-up published today Herald reporter Barry Toohey insisted Green had no interest in the job at Castleford and would be staying with the Knights.
St George Illawarra Dragons boss Ryan Carr is believed to be one of those in the running, while Gold Coast Titans number two Jim Lenihan is also thought to be interested in the role, despite the uncertainty around the top job at the Titans at present. Love Rugby League have also claimed that Ian Watson has been shortlisted.
Chris Chester on when a Castleford Tigers appointment will be made and potential start date
Green has been in the Knights’ coaching set up since retiring as a player in 2021 and he currently works as an assistant under head coach Adam O’Brien, who finds himself under presser at present with results being hard to come by so far this season.
The 38-year-old has been mentioned as potential candidate to replace O’Brien should he leave the Knights, but NRL 360 panellist James Hooper has questioned that.
“There’s a big push on for Blake Green,” Hooper said on the programme. “I’m not saying he won’t make a very competent head coach at some point, but he’s in charge of their attack at the moment, and their attack is one of the worst, diabolical, putrid in terms of what they’ve been able to produce.
“That’s not a knock on him, but I’m just saying it is a strange narrative.”
