The Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period, powered by Tyrepower, kicked off on Monday with every club meeting at Marvel Stadium.
West Coast’s Head of List Management and Recruiting Matt Clarke spoke to Trade Radio and provided an update on the Eagles’ player movement activity.
On a trade for Brandon Starcevich:
“We’ll have some more dialogue with Brisbane. We’ve started that over the weekend. There’s a little bit more to play out there, but we’re really excited that he’s committed to the club so we’ll work pretty hard to get that deal done.”
On pick 16 not being part of any Starcevich trade:
“Ideally, yes. We think it’s a really valuable pick and we put a lot of work into that last year getting that in, so yeah at this stage that’s going to stay with us.”
Indication on free agency compensation for Oscar Allen:
“Nothing as yet. That’s up to Brisbane when they lodge and what the offer is. Obviously, ‘Oz’ has committed to them under free agency and told us that as soon as our exits (interviews) finished. We appreciate what free agency looks like in the current market, we’ve just got to wait and see when Brisbane lodge that.”
“We think that really adds to our back six.”

Trading for Tylar Young from Richmond:
“We look at our depth of position. Obviously losing Jeremy McGovern this year unfortunately and Tom Barrass traded out last year we know we need some key position depth, but also a starting 23 player and we see that in Tylar for us. Really excited to have a guy of his size and stature to play those roles to help our guys down back. The Tiges and I have had a bit of a discussion last week, I don’t think we’re going to be that far apart on what that looks like, so we’ll have a couple more chats this week.”
Brandon Starcevich as a player:
“He plays with an unbelievable hardness, doesn’t he, and he’s got great experience. He’s a really good culture guy, he’s going to fit our locker room really well, so he’s got some guys around that can really help in our back half. Hopefully we get Brandon and Tylar over the line, we think that really adds to our back six in a lot of ways.”
Campbell Chesser trade negotiations with Carlton:
“We had a quick chat the last couple of weeks, we’re a little bit apart on that, but I think we can come to some sort of agreement on what that looks like. We obviously wanted to retain Campbell, he’s a first-round pick, four years in, we’ve done a lot of work with him to actually get him up and going. We’re disappointed, we understand it, but at this stage we’re a little bit apart from where we sit (with Carlton).”
Liam Ryan’s trade request:
“’Flyin’ Ryan is a contracted player. We’re happy to keep Liam, he’s not disgruntled with the club at all, and we’re not disgruntled the other way either. We think he can really add to us. He’s contracted next year so it’ll be up to St Kilda to come to us with something that’s sufficient.”
On bundling picks to move up the draft order:
“We have obviously got a number of options there in those picks to actually move up, so we’ll look at that.”
On which players the club is targeting at the top of the draft order:
“We haven’t done our final (draftee) ratings yet, so the (recruiting) boys have been putting a power of work into it all year. There’s some really good exciting guys at the top, there’s some guys there attached to other clubs (via academy and father-son) that we really like to. We’ll be putting them in an order and if we need to bid on someone we will.”
On how the club will use its four additional rookie spots:
“There will be a combination of factors there. Ideally we would like some experience in those rookie types and guys who can fit positions on our field, but also from a maturity point-of-view. We’ve got a lot of youth on our list and we’re going to add some more at the top end of the draft this year.”
