SALISBURY — The Rowan County Championship for girls golf has been moved up to Tuesday because of the weather forecast for Wednesday.
The girls will play 18 holes at McCanless, which is a change mentally, physically — and emotionally — from their normal nine-holes matches.
East Rowan has won the last eight team titles since Carson was crowned as champ in 2016. The Mustangs are likely to make it nine straight, although South Rowan has a chance. The best three scores for each team count. South consistently has two of the top players in the county, so it’s a matter of getting a good solid score to be right in there with the Mustangs.
A Mustang has won the last five individual titles, although the individual championship is a lot more up in the air than the team crown. East’s Kaley Pfister is back to defend the title that she won with an 85 last year, but also back are East’s Jaelyn Earnhardt and South’s Sara Culbert. They shot 87s in 2024.
East’s Izzy Stepp and South’s Margo Maples are also in the top tier in the county. The next group includes East’s Cailey Ludwig and Ashlyn Pfister and South’s Sawyer Sherrill. Salisbury’s Lola Koontz, who is also playing tennis, shot 50 recently.

South’s Culbert placed third with a 41. Maples was sixth with a 44. Sawyer Sherrill shot 51 and was South’s third scorer. She was 10th.
Robinson’s Ava Mason was medalist with a 39. Northwest’s Carson Verburg shot 45 for sixth place. Concord’s Jordan Simons shot 50 and was ninth.
Northwest was third in the team scoring with a 152 total. Carson was fourth at 161. Also posting team scores were Concord (162), West Rowan (166) and Salisbury (178).
