Former Collingwood AFL player Shannon Cox sentenced over crash that killed two women in WA

Former Collingwood player Shannon Cox has been jailed for more than 10 years over the death of two women in a horrific highway crash.

Cox, 39, was driving a Toyota Prado that crashed head-on into a Suzuki Ignis in Cooljarloo, 170km north of Perth, in June 2024.

The ex-footballer was travelling south when he drifted into oncoming traffic on Brand Hwy, hitting a truck and then the hatchback of longtime friends Coral Seinor, 83, and Thelma Clausen, 82.

The pair died at the scene.

Former AFL footballer Cox, who had his 12-year-old daughter in the front seat, had taken meth in the days before the crash and had hardly slept.

He pleaded guilty to two counts of manslaughter in March.

In Perth’s District Court on Wednesday he was jailed for 10 years and six months.

There were emotional scenes as daughters of both women, from Jurien Bay, read out impact statements.

They told Cox that their families are now serving a life sentence of grief for his avoidable crime.

Seinor and Clausen were described as selfless, kind-hearted and community-minded women.

“Their lives mattered. They left a legacy not just in what they did or who they were but how they made us feel — loved and safe,” Suzanne Seinor said outside court.

The pair were life members of the Country Women’s Association and on a road trip to a CWA event when they died.

Cox, who played 25 games for the Magpies across three seasons from 2007, will be eligible for parole in 2033.
