Presence, the supernatural horror film from acclaimed director Steven Soderbergh and starring Lucy Liu, has found itself a streaming subscription home in the UK after being available to buy or rent.

The film follows a family who move into a new suburban home, only to discover that it might already be inhabited by something that doesn’t want them there. The daughter of the family is also struggling to grieve after the recent death of her friend, but could it be connected?

Soderbergh chose to make the film in an interest manner, presenting it from the point of view of the Presence itself, like a reverse found-footage film with a floatier camera.

LAist praised Soderbergh for making a “cool little experimental lark” decades into his career, while AVClub enjoyed “simultaneous braininess and gimmickry of [the POV] technique”.

“It’s an art film that also works as a spellbinding horror film,” Vulture said, “and it might be the best thing Soderbergh has done in ages.”

The Sydney Morning Herald noted the screenplay from David Koepp, calling him “as adaptable as Soderbergh” when it comes to tackles different genres and filmmaking experiments.

“It’s a highly controlled piece of filmmaking and the climax is incredibly scary,” the review continues. “I can’t say it has me believing in ghosts, but it does put the case with a disarming sophistication.”
