Lorentz, 29, skated three shifts with just 1:17 of ice time before appearing to suffer the injury late in the first period. He was not on the bench at the start of the second frame, and the team announced he would not return to the action not long after.
The sixth-year centre registered two assists in the Maple Leafs’ season opener against the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday. This is his second season in Toronto – the Kitchener, Ont., native scored eight goals and totaled 19 points in 80 games last year.
The Maple Leafs are Lorentz’s fourth NHL team over his six-year career. After being selected in the seventh round (186th overall) by the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, Lorentz debuted with the team in the 2020-21 campaign. He has also made stops with the San Jose Sharks and Florida Panthers.
In 311 career NHL games, Lorentz has 29 goals and 64 points.
