Following Steven Gerrard’s decision to withdraw from discussions about a return to Ibrox, Glasgow Rangers have turned their attention to alternative candidates for the head coach position. Among those approached is Graham Potter.

The Daily Record and Daily Express claim that former West Ham manager Graham Potter has held talks with Glasgow Rangers about their vacant managerial role; but Danny Rohl remains the frontrunner for the position. Potter, 50, was dismissed by West Ham last month after a disappointing tenure that saw him win just six of 25 matches.

Despite this setback, he bizarrely holds appeal for clubs seeking a long-term project, even after failing at Chelsea and more recently West Ham.

West Ham’s worst ever manager linked with Rangers job

Rangers, currently sitting eighth in the Scottish Premiership after a poor start to the 2025/26 season, are in urgent need of a turnaround, so why they would turn to Potter is anyone’s guess.

The managerial position became available after Russell Martin was sacked following a brief and underwhelming four-month spell. Gerrard, who led Rangers to their 55th league title in 2021, was initially the top candidate and held talks with the club. However, he ultimately declined the opportunity, citing poor timing for a return.

Danny Rohl, the former Sheffield Wednesday manager, is now the leading candidate. Rohl has reportedly impressed Rangers’ hierarchy during initial talks and is now viewed as the favourite to take the helm.

Rangers fans will quite rightly be sceptical of Potter’s suitability, especially given the club’s need for immediate results and emotional uplift following a turbulent period.

Supporters will be hopeful that Rohl is appointed and the coming days will be crucial as Rangers aim to finalise their choice ahead of their next league fixture against Dundee United.
