Diane Keaton’s surprising death has her ex, Al Pacino, wondering about what could have been, the Daily Mail reported on Sunday, October 12.
“Looking back, Al admits the love of his life was Diane,” a source told the outlet of the pair, who began dating on and off in 1974 after filming 1972’s The Godfather.
The feeling seems to have been mutual. “For me the Godfathers, all three of them, were about one thing — Al. It was as simple as that,” the Annie Hall actress wrote in her 2011 memoir, Then Again, per the New York Times.

But after filming the final movie in their famous mobster trilogy in 1990, Keaton gave the Scent of a Woman actor, 85, a marriage ultimatum.
“Poor Al, he never wanted it. Poor me, I never stopped insisting,” the Oscar winner, who died at 79 on Saturday, October 11, wrote.
“For years after he and Diane split, Al used to say, ‘If it’s meant to be, it’s never too late for a do-over.’ But sadly, now it is,” the source told the Daily Mail, adding that the pair “never spoke” even though they lived near one another in L.A.
“I know he will forever regret he didn’t make his move when he had the chance.”
Pacino, who has four children, never married.
