Changkuoth Jiath to Melbourne set to be confirmed

Channel Seven’s Mitch Cleary says the Jiath to Melbourne deal has been agreed and will be completed, with pick 42 heading back to Hawthorn.

Keep an eye on that one when the morotorium is lifted in about 20 minutes.

Where is the plan B?

This whole trade period we’ve heard Hawthorn need a midfielder and the Bulldogs need a defender. Are there any whispers about Hawthorn having a back-up option if Merrett doesn’t go, or are they all-in on him? And have the Bulldogs targeted any defenders since enquiring about Wilkie?

– Dan

At this late stage it looks like Merrett or bust for Hawthorn. If the Hawks had their time again, would they have gone harder at Christian Petracca? Or, should the ZM deal fall through, are they happy to hold fire and wait for a Zak Butters push next year?

As for the Dogs, once Cal Wilkie chose to stay at the Saints that was pretty much it for them. It’s to their credit, in a way, that they haven’t gone too far down their own list to take a defender – any defender – just for the sake of it.

Collingwood makes its Jy Simpkin move?

Mick Gleeson at The Age is reporting Collingwood has offered a 2027 first-rounder and this year’s pick 46 to North Melbourne for Simpkin.

Gleeson says North wants two future firsts instead.

Interesting.

Fair value for Clarry

What do you think is a fair deal for Oliver?

– Ed

Depends how much of his salary the Demons are covering. If it’s a 50-50 split, then the future third GWS has on the table is a bit soft.

Dees are pretty keen to move him on though, so I think they’ll take what they’re given at some point. Especially now they’re into Jack Steele, it could effectively be a straight swap for them in what becomes effectively a three-way deal.

Don’t give up on Rowan Marshall yet

What do we reckon about Rowan Marshall? Seems to be moot now.

– Pat

The Saints say he is staying, but it sounds as if he still wants the Cats and the Cats still want him.

Absolutely stinks of a last-minute Geelong offer being accepted to me. I reckon this one happens.

What ends up happening with Jy Simpkin?

Who caves (if either)? Pies want Simpkin and offer a future first rounder, North want two first rounders. Simpkin absolutely not worth that, but North need something now if their captain is going to leave…

– Harry

I feel like the asking price is too steep from North, so they probably end up holding onto Simpkin.

He’s not that big a needle-mover for the Pies that they cave and give away such draft equity, in my opinion.

Can’t get enough trading?Matt Rosa(Getty Images)

You’re in luck! Clubs can continue trading draft picks up until, and even during, the AFL draft. The draft will be held on November 19 and 20 this year, so that’s another month of speculation and scrambing to enjoy.

And there absolutely will be movement inside the 10 draft picks this year, don’t worry about that. The draft order as it sits at 7.30pm tonight will not be the way it looks when the first selection is made in a month.

Do Steele and Ah Chee get done?

Gird your loins for the 2pm trade opening! Do you reckon Jack Steele go across to the Dees, and do you think Ah Chee will get walked to the draft or that Brisbane will accept Adelaide’s offer?

– Kate

My gut feel is that Steele gets his move to the Demons because that makes sense for both parties.

I think Ah Chee also gets traded as well, albeit with some silly late picks shuffled around that makes us all wonder why it took this long for this deal to happen.

Are people watching the Socceroos instead?

Why are there no trades allowed until 2pm today? Is it because everyone is watching the Socceroos play?

– Charles Clements

Charles makes a fair point. However, if you’re a Socceroos x Trades fan, boy have I got the link for you.

The great Simon Smale is working wonders over in our Socceroos blog. Get the multi-screens going people!

How many trades get done in red time?

If I gave you a line of 13.5 for trades done at 7:25 or later, are you taking the under or over :p

– LW

I reckon if it’s over 13.5 trades done after 7.25pm, both Dean and I will need to get hand transplants after the speed of typing required. Good lord.

Can someone tell me who Clive’s angry at today?

No they are not. NO is a very clear answer to just about everyone in the world. Except to gossip mungers and the deaf.

Some toxic trade proposals are flowing in

Toxic trade deal, how about Brad Scott for Sam Mitchell 🤣

– Greg

Everyone says no. Essendon send Merrett, Kako and pick 5, Hawthorn send Watson, pick 9 + 31 and Mitch Lewis

– Harry

Most disgusting is Jarman Impey and Blake Hardwick. So toxic trading 2 best culture players

– Max

Essendon trade the 1984 premiership for the 1983 premiership

– Local Expert

Do you think a portrait of Jeff, may get Zach across the line. Or the on again off again Will Day and maybe Mabior

– Phil

How about Josh Ward and Cam McKenzie for Merrett and a second round pick. I bet Hawthorn will jump at that.

– David

How does trade deadline day pan out?

Love your work Chris and Dean. Do you reckon we see a flurry of lesser trades at 2.01pm and then nothing before all (some) of the big ones between 7.25pm and 7.30pm to make the AFL happy?

– Sam

I think this is exactly how the deadline pans out, Sam.

Smaller moves like Buller, Jiath etc will get done early in the afternoon.

The headliners will go right down to the wire for #PrimeTimeTV.

39m agoWed 15 Oct 2025 at 2:00amOne hour until trading officially opens

If you’re wondering why no deals have gone through yet today, it’s because the AFL imposes a deadline day morotorium on clubs until 2pm AEDT. They can chat away on the phone all they like, but the war rooms don’t open and the deals can’t be lodged until the clock strikes two.

After that we’ve got five and a half hours of madness. Or, more accurately, four hours of silence and 90 minutes of madness.

Give us your most toxic Bombers-Hawks trade deal

Sicily + 9 for Merrett, essendon need a hard nut to set the standards for the youngsters, hawks defence is stacked enough they can lose him

– Mark

You know what? This idea from Mark has given me an idea, send us your best ‘everyone says no’ trade offer either Essendon and Hawthorn will send each other today.

What is the risk with the pre-season draft?

With Callum Ah Chee, would the risk for Adelaide be that the Eagles would be able to pick him up in the pre season draft? I think they would have the salary space.

Potentially Brisbane think that Adelaide may not risk it?

– JB

That is exactly the risk you run by walking a player to the pre-season draft, but generally the salary and the list spots dissuade teams at the top of the pre-season draft from taking a player such as Callum Ah Chee.

G’day Chrisso and Deano! Wally’s last day today. I can see the coasters pulling something big off for a big name player today…watch this space. Cheers wally.

What happened to the Sanders-Adelaide buzz?

there were rumblings last week about a possible move of Ryley Sanders to Adelaide. Was that just speculation or was/is there substance to it?

– Will

The Crows did in fact kick the tyres on Ryley Sanders last week, but were swiftly told no and promptly moved on.

I don’t think it’s the last time a rival asks the question of Sanders, who is going to be in high demand from Tasmania, given he hails from that region.

Will Cam Mackenzie be able to thrive at Essendon?

Mackenzie is a lose lose
Hawks lose a good player and Essendon can’t develop him

– Richard

I don’t know whether this is fair, Richard. I think this would be a win-win for both clubs.

Hawthorn gets a player in Merrett that firmly puts them in the premiership window, and Essendon gets a midfielder who many believe has high upside.

What’s the latest on Jy Simpkin?

ANy updates on Jy and Collingwood or is that over?

– Hazpies2025

Here’s Cal Twomey on where things stand as it pertains to Jy Simpkin potentially moving to Collingwood.

“Collingwood would be a chance to extend him to a fifth year but the gap between the two clubs’ trade price is too steep,” he told Trade Radio.

“I don’t know if this one can get done.”
