The family of beloved actress Diane Keaton has revealed how she died last Saturday.

The 79-year-old star known for her roles in popular movies including The First Wives Club, Father of the Bride, and Annie Hall, died from pneumonia.

Her cause of death was revealed in an exclusive statement to People, which thanked Keaton’s fans for their “extraordinary” love and support for the Oscar winner.

“The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11,” the statement said.

“She loved her animals and she was steadfast in her support of the unhoused community, so any donations in her memory to a local food bank or an animal shelter would be a wonderful and much appreciated tribute to her.”

The outlet reports that a close source revealed Keaton’s death was unexpected and that her health declined suddenly.

Emergency services were called to Keaton’s Los Angeles home about 8am on Saturday and the icon was was taken to a nearby hospital where she passed away.

“In her final months, she was surrounded only by her closest family, who chose to keep things very private. Even longtime friends weren’t fully aware of what was happening,” the source told People.
