Brisbane Broncos have offered Burleigh Bears front-rower Takitau Mapapalangi a golden opportunity to break into the NRL, handing the young forward a six-week train-and-trial contract ahead of the 2026 season.
The fan-favourite from the QLD Cup will join Michael Maguire’s squad for pre-season at Red Hill, hoping to earn a full-time deal by following the path once taken by centre Gehamat Shibasaki.Â
It’s a major step up for the 21-year-old, who now gets to learn alongside established stars such as Payne Haas and Xavier Willison.

Rookie of the Year ready for next step
Mapapalangi has been a revelation for Burleigh, scoring six tries in his final seven games of the 2025 campaign and earning the club’s Rookie of the Year award.Â
His powerful runs and relentless defence have made him one of the competition’s most exciting young prospects, finishing the season with 45 tackle busts, 177 tackles and an average of 75 running metres per game.
Although the trial deal lasts just under two months, the door remains open for an extended contract should he impress during pre-season. For a player who has worked his way up through the state system, Mapapalangi’s arrival at Red Hill represents more than just a chance, it’s the start of a dream to carve out his own place in Brisbane’s famous forward pack.
