Before the interruption, South Africa had kept Sri Lanka in check at 46/2 after 12 overs. Masabata Klass had handed South Africa a strong start against Sri Lanka, striking twice early to remove Hasini Perera and captain Chamari Athapaththu.
Earlier, Sri Lanka also provided a positive update on opener Vishmi Gunaratne, who was forced to retire hurt against South Africa. The team management confirmed that Gunaratne had not sustained any serious injury following medical assessments and mentioned she would return to bat once play resumes following proper treatment.
Perera, who walked in after Vishmi Gunaratne was forced to retire hurt, was the first to fall as she was bowled by an inswinger from Klass that crashed into her off stump. Klass continued her impressive spell in the next over, trapping Athapaththu LBW to help South Africa claim two wickets at the end of powerplay.
Early in the innings, Sri Lanka suffered an early setback earlier as Gunaratne was forced to retire hurt after sustaining a painful knee injury. The opener was struck on the knee while attempting to slide her bat at the non-striker’s end during a single, leaving her in visible pain before she was stretchered off the field.
