Pioneering the Future of AI in Healthcare

Microsoft Research (MSR) is seeking an exceptional Senior Researcher in Machine Learning for Healthcare to join its world-class Multi-Modal AI Team within Microsoft Health Futures. Based in Cambridge, UK, this position offers an unparalleled opportunity to advance state-of-the-art research at the intersection of artificial intelligence, healthcare, and medical innovation.

The successful candidate will play a critical role in developing multi-modal large language models (LLMs) and other AI systems designed to improve healthcare outcomes, enhance medical workflows, and address pressing challenges in clinical decision-making and patient care.

About Microsoft Research Health Futures

Health Futures, part of Microsoft Research, brings together interdisciplinary teams of computer scientists, clinicians, engineers, and social scientists. Their mission is to transform healthcare systems by creating technologies that are ethical, efficient, and equitable. The Cambridge lab is globally recognized for its innovation in AI-driven health solutions, particularly in medical imaging, bioinformatics, and multi-modal learning systems.

As healthcare systems adopt data-driven solutions, Microsoft Research continues to bridge the gap between cutting-edge machine learning and real-world clinical impact, ensuring that AI tools are both scientifically robust and responsibly designed.

Role Overview

The Senior Researcher will lead and contribute to pioneering research initiatives that integrate AI and machine learning into healthcare contexts. This involves developing scalable models and tools that leverage multi-modal data—including text, images, and structured clinical information—to enhance diagnosis, treatment, and patient care pathways.

The ideal candidate is not only a skilled machine learning expert but also a visionary thinker who understands how AI can revolutionize healthcare. This individual will collaborate with internal Microsoft teams and leading external medical research institutions to drive tangible impact.

Key Responsibilities

Advance Multi-Modal Medical AI:
Design, implement, and evaluate machine learning models that combine multiple data modalities (e.g., medical imaging, text, genomics) to improve clinical outcomes.

Collaborate on AI System Design:
Work closely with clinicians, data scientists, and engineers to create AI systems that align with real-world healthcare workflows and responsible AI standards.

Deliver Research Excellence:
Publish high-impact papers in leading AI and healthcare journals or conferences such as NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, Nature, MICCAI, or CVPR.

Strategic Leadership:
Provide guidance and technical leadership in shaping the strategic direction of Health Futures’ AI research portfolio.

Partnership Engagement:
Collaborate with both internal stakeholders and external research partners to translate cutting-edge research into deployable healthcare technologies.

Responsible AI Practices:
Ensure that all AI models and datasets adhere to Microsoft’s responsible AI principles, prioritizing safety, transparency, and fairness in clinical applications.

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates must meet the following minimum qualifications:

Educational Background:

PhD in Machine Learning, Computer Science, or a closely related discipline.

Equivalent experience in academic or industrial research will also be considered.

Experience Requirements:

Proven record of at least 3 years of professional or postdoctoral research experience in applied AI or machine learning.

Demonstrated ability to work on multidisciplinary teams bridging technology and healthcare.

Technical Expertise:

Advanced proficiency in Python and deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.

Strong background in designing and training large-scale deep learning models.

Practical experience with data engineering, API development, and cloud-based deployment (e.g., Azure or AWS).

Familiarity with containerization technologies such as Docker or Kubernetes.

Competence in version control systems like Git/GitHub.

Soft Skills and Attributes:

Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

Strong problem-solving ability, critical thinking, and attention to detail.

Proven ability to work independently and meet deadlines in a hybrid or remote environment.

A passion for applying AI research to real-world healthcare challenges.

Preferred Qualifications

While not mandatory, the following qualifications are highly desirable:

A portfolio of peer-reviewed publications in top AI or healthcare conferences (e.g., NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, MICCAI, CVPR, EMNLP).

Experience in health-related domains, including radiology, digital pathology, genomics, or immunology.

Expertise in one or more of the following:

Multi-modal learning

Reinforcement learning

Domain adaptation

Data-efficient or federated learning

Large language model alignment

Understanding of responsible AI frameworks and ethical AI practices in healthcare.

Familiarity with CI/CD systems, web authentication protocols (OAuth 2.0), or data orchestration tools such as Airflow.

Prior experience or research engagement with Microsoft’s AI ecosystems is a plus.
