The Premier League are reportedly in talks to scrap the traditional Boxing Day fixtures as they look to address the Christmas chaos

The Premier League are reportedly in talks to scrap the traditional Boxing Day fixtures.

The Premier League are considering scrapping Boxing Day fixtures from the domestic calendar. It’s been claimed that the top-flight governing body is having difficulty scheduling fixtures due to the expanded UEFA competitions and the FA Cup having three weekend slots.

The FA Cup fourth, fifth and sixth round games have a dedicated weekend slot to fulfill said fixtures, leaving the Premier League with fewer weekends to fit in their games. As things stand, the Premier League has only been able to announce TV picks for games up until Christmas.

The Daily Mail claim they are the only games to have been given the green light, with league sources suggesting it would be better to divide the announcement for TV selections to give supporters time to sort travel and accommodation.

The Premier League and broadcasters currently have a minimum of six weeks to announce any changes to the fixture schedule, with some still open to potential changes should they be impacted by European games.

However, many supporters still claim that there is not enough time, and are left out of pocket because dates and times have changed.

The report claims one game over the festive period is slowing down the next round of TV selection announcements and conversations are taking place over whether the traditional Boxing Day matches will occur, though it’s said the process is a complicated one.

Given the aforementioned shortage of weekends available to the Premier League, December 27th being one of those, it remains to be seen how many, if any, games will be moved.

As things stand, no games are set to take place on Boxing Day, with all 20 Premier League teams set to do battle on Saturday, December 27th, though that could well change.
