It’s official. Hong Kong superstar Ka Ying Rising is the world’s best sprinter after taking out the $20m Everest at Randwick Racecourse.
The red-hot favourite, who improved his career record to 15 wins from 17 starts with the Everest win, held off three-year-old filly Tempted to win the richest race in in the world on turf.
Trainer David Hayes admitted after the win that he was confident he had the winning horse, especially after seeing the position his horse settled in the 1200m feature.
“When they hadn’t used over him the straight I thought they would have to be good to pass him. What a run,” Hayes said on Channel 7.
“He had to run below form not to win today. I didn’t say that, I couldn’t be cocky but I would have been disappointed if he didn’t win he saddled up calm.”

His jockey Zac Purton says he was worried by a trial the horse had 10 days before the main event, but ultimately thought cream would rise to the top.
“I don’t think we have seen him at his best today but when he’s not at his best he is still good enough,” Purton said.
“It made me a little bit emotional. You appreciate it more now because you know it is almost over.
“I am just so lucky. I have been really lucky to have this horse come along now.”
Ka Ying Rising started rock bottom odds on the tote, winning as a $1.45 favourite.
