The Colorado High School Cycling League state championships kicked off on Saturday in Glenwood Springs.

The top-25 varsity and top-40 junior varsity, sophomore and freshman riders from each of the league’s four regions (determined by finishes at the four regular-season events) qualified for the two-day state championships, held on the Colorado Mountain College Spring Valley campus trails. The top-5 placing riders on each team — across any of the eight categories (freshman, sophomore, junior varsity and varsity boys and girls) — counted towards team scoring. The freshmen and junior varsity fields competed on Saturday.

Vail Ski and Snowboard’s Tyler Moore posted the highest finish of any local rider on day 1 with his ninth-place result in the freshmen boys competition. Moore completed two of the 5.6-mile loops, each of which included 653 feet of climb, in 53 minutes, 38.29 seconds. Palmer’s Will Friesema (49:15.65) won the race. VSSA’s Trevan Baker (1:02:38.79) finished in 89th out of 148 freshmen cyclists.

Teammate Elsie Robinson (1:10:35.87) finished 32nd in the sophomore girls race, won by Lakewood’s Mylie Hoffer (57:01.65).
