At the conclusion of the Dutch Grand Prix in August, Oscar Piastri was a raging favourite to win the F1 driver’s championship after crossing the line first in Zandvoort.
The Australian led his McLaren team-mate Lando Norris by 34 points, while his advantage was 104 points over Max Verstappen, who has won the last four driver’s championships.
However, with five races remaining, Piastri’s lead over Norris has been cut to 14 points, while Verstappen is only 40 points behind and appears to be gathering momentum.
Piastri finished fifth in Monday’s (AEDT) United States Grand Prix, with Verstappen winning the race and Norris finishing second.

Since the Dutch Grand Prix, Verstappen has won in Italy, Azerbaijan and now the United States, while he finished second in Singapore.
Piastri has only finished on the podium once in that time with a third-place result in Italy and is desperately in need of finding form with races in Mexico, Brazil, Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi to come.
Listed below, the top 10 finishers in a race get points, with first receiving 25, second 18, third 15, fourth 12 and so on.
Two of the final five races will also have a sprint, which will see the winner secure eight points, second seven points and it continues on down in this fashion until eighth gets a single point.
Can Piastri hold on to his lead and become the third Australian to win the F1 driver’s championship?
