The new “Queensland Energy Roadmap” is a nightmare. At the heart of the plan is the brazen and unprecedented extension of five state-owned coal-fired power stations, each by many years past their retirement dates and, implicitly, all beyond the year 2050. It’s depicted in the report in this graphic:
Between 2021 and 2022, I tracked what was then a flurry of news items announcing the “early” closure of coal-fired power stations before their scheduled retirement dates. Each of these announcements were very significant, in that in closing years early, the coal plants would spew out significantly less pollution.
