Tim David has blasted his way into Australian cricket history with a record-breaking innings that sealed a six-wicket victory and an unassailable 3-0 lead in their five-match T20I series against the West Indies. Chasing the home side’s formidable target of 215, the big-hitting David helped dig the tourists out of a hole with the fastest-ever century for Australia in the shortest format of the game.

David’s historic ton came off just 37 deliveries and his unbeaten 102 included a staggering 11 sixes and six boundaries to help Australia chase down the target with 23 balls to spare. David had already etched his name in the record books with a Australia’s quickest T20i fifty, off just 16 balls.

But the records kept tumbling as the middle-order powerhouse belted the Windies’ bowlers to all parts of the ground in St Kitts. David shared in an unbroken 128-run stand with the impressive Mitch Owen (36 not out off 16 balls) to guide Australia home to their third-straight victory in the five-match series.

David’s record feat was all the more remarkable considering the Aussies had slumped to 4-92 in the ninth over after West Indies openers Shai Hope (102 not out off 57 balls) and Brandon King (62 off 36) lay the platform for the home side’s big total. Windies skipper Hope notched his highest T20I score after reaching his first century off 55 deliveries, having been sent in to bat for the third straight game.

The West Indies’ 4-214 looked like being more than enough when Australia lost 4-56 after racing out to 30 runs off the first two overs without losing a wicket. But the Aussie downfall started when Glenn Maxwell – promoted to opener – was run out for 20 (off seven), before Josh Inglis’ cameo (15 off six) ended when he hit a ball straight to the fielder at deep square leg. Skipper Mitch Marsh (22 off 19) was caught behind off a thick outside edge and Cameron Green (11 off 14) departed soon after from a top edge.

But the introduction of David turned the match on its head as the middle order slogger singlehandedly destroyed the hapless Windies’ bowling attack. David launched an extraordinary assault on the three West Indies spinners, blasting nine sixes in a match-changing three-over onslaught, including four in a row off Gudakesh Motie.

He was dropped on 90 at wide long on but completed Australia’s fastest T20I century and sealed the win with a leg-glanced boundary with 23 balls remaining. “I didn’t think I would have the opportunity to score a hundred for Australia, so I’m so grateful for that opportunity and pretty stoked,” David told ESPN.

“The pitch was good and obviously there was a strong breeze and small boundaries, so you’ve got to back your strengths and it’s probably best when I’m attacking them.” The century also saw David eclipse his previous best T20I score of 92 for Singapore, which was the nation of his birth.
