Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge targeted in alleged $100k extortion threat

Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge was the target of an alleged $100,000 extortion threat.

According to court documents released to The Age, Beveridge received a letter in late June demanding the six-figure sum.

It’s alleged Brendon Berry, the son of late boxing trainer Leo Berry, threatened Beveridge in the letter, which demanded payment “in a manner which a reasonable person would regard as menacing”.

The exact contents of the letter are unclear.

The incident prompted the Bulldogs and the AFL to employ extra security for the coach in the Round 17 match against North Melbourne.

Berry, 53, failed to attend court on Tuesday and a warrant was issued for his arrest. He also failed to appear in court on October 3 and 14.

“I don’t issue warrants ever lightly. We explore all possibilities as we should … and I think I’ve exhausted all those possibilities,” Magistrate Donna Bakos said.

Berry is charged with making an unwarranted demand for money with menace and using a postal service in a manner that could be regarded as menacing.

Beveridge was the third coach this year to be given extra security, as spotted by The Agenda Setters.

The AFL integrity unit had previously beefed up its security of senior coaches after two separate threats to Michael Voss and Simon Goodwin.

Less than a month later, Goodwin was threatened by an anonymous X account online. The AFL integrity unit investigated the incident, but Goodwin chose not to take it further.
