Writing about AI is like engaging in chat with your teenager – both offer the distinct possibility of making you feel, as that teenager might say, “cringe”. I have a feeling that even using the term “AI” in a year’s time will make me look hopelessly outdated, like someone calling the internet “the information superhighway”. AI is a part of approximately 80 per cent of my conversations right now, but I suspect that very soon, it’ll be so ubiquitous as to barely rate a mention.

And yet, here I am writing about AI because it’s the biggest thing to happen to shopping this year. For all the ways that AI has befuddled me, it feels like it finally has something concrete – and straightforward! – to offer me. Using AI to make better, more informed shopping choices?
