The Minnesota Timberwolves (1-0) head to Crypto.com Arena on Friday night to square off against the Los Angeles Lakers (0-1) in an early-season Western Conference showdown.

The Lakers are looking to put last season’s disappointment behind them. Despite a solid regular season that saw them finish third in the West, their playoff campaign ended abruptly with a 4–1 first-round defeat to these same Timberwolves. The addition of Luka Doncic last year was a major storyline, and while the chemistry took some time to develop, expectations are sky-high now that the Slovenian superstar has a full offseason under his belt. Unfortunately for Los Angeles, their start hasn’t gone according to plan. After an encouraging preseason where they dropped just one of six games, a 126–116 loss to Golden State, they stumbled in their regular-season opener against that same Warriors squad, falling 119–109 at home.

As for Minnesota, they’re coming off a season to be proud of, having reached the Western Conference Finals before running into a red-hot Oklahoma City team. Their sights this year are firmly set on going one step further and capturing an NBA title. The Timberwolves’ preseason form wasn’t much to write home about — their lone win came against Guangzhou, while losses to Chicago and Philadelphia raised some eyebrows. Still, they kicked off the regular season on the right note, taking down the Portland Trail Blazers 118–114 on the road.

Los Angeles Lakers team news

The Lakers came out sluggish, letting Golden State dictate the tempo and finding themselves down by a dozen after the first quarter. They fought back to even the score by halftime but collapsed defensively in the third, allowing the Warriors to pull away again.

Luka Doncic was electric in his Lakers debut, nearly recording a triple-double with 42 points, 12 rebounds, and 9 assists, while Austin Reaves chipped in 26 points and 9 assists of his own. The absence of LeBron James, who remains sidelined with an injury, was clearly felt throughout the game.

Minnesota Timberwolves team news

It wasn’t an easy win by any means last time out, Minnesota trailed after each of the first three quarters and entered the fourth down by six. But when it mattered most, they flipped the switch. Anthony Edwards led the charge with a dazzling 41-point, seven-rebound performance, while Julius Randle provided valuable support with 19 points, seven boards, and six assists. The Timberwolves’ late surge proved too much for Portland, showing the kind of resilience and star power that could make them a force once again this season.
