Former Saint Francis men’s basketball standout Josh Cohen was selected with the 14th pick by the Sioux Falls Skyforce in the NBA G-League Draft on Saturday.Â
Cohen ended his time in Loretto after the 2022-23 season and became the 43rd player in program history to reach 1,000 points, the 29th player with 500 rebounds, and the 20th player with 1,000 points and 500 rebounds. He finished his Saint Francis career with 1,132 points and 533 rebounds. In his final season in a Red Flash uniform, Cohen, the 2023 NEC Co-Player of the Year, became the second player in team history to register two 40-point games in his career after scoring 40 points against Lehigh on November 21, 2022, and 40 points at Hawai’i on December 11, 2022. Stokes is the only other player to register multiple 40-point games in his career.Â
Cohen becomes the first Red Flash player drafted in the G-League since Isaiah Blackmon was taken with the 26th pick in the 2021 draft by the Greensboro Swarm. Current associate head coach Devin Sweetney was also drafted in the 2010 NBA D-League draft by the Tulsa 66ers. The D-League was renamed the NBA G League starting in the 2017-18 season. Sweetney played in the NBA D-League with the Bakersfield Jam (Los Angeles Clippers) in 2011, the Capital City Go-Go in 2018-19, and appeared in four preseason games with the Denver Nuggets in 2015. Sweetney also coached in the NBA G League with the Windy City Bulls (2021-22) and the Santa Cruz Warriors (2022-23). Assistant coach Tanner Massey also has experience in the G League, including coaching Sweetney in 2018-19 with Capital City.
The NBA G League is the NBA’s official minor league, preparing players, coaches, officials, trainers, and front-office staff for the NBA while acting as the league’s research and development laboratory. Featuring 31 teams — 30 with one-to-one affiliations with NBA franchises — the league offers elite professional basketball at an affordable price in a fun, family-friendly atmosphere. NBA G League Ignite will also play against G League competition.
If Cohen makes the jump to the NBA, he would join Norm Van Lier (SFU-1966-69), Rick Hockenos (SFU-1972-74), Mike Iuzzolino (SFU-1989-91), Kevin Porter (SFU-1968-82), and 2004 Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer Maurice Stokes (SFU-1951-55) as former Red Flash standouts to play in the NBA.
