TULSA, Okla. — Charlotte Men’s Tennis wraps up competition at the American Conference Individual Championships, highlighted by an appearance in the finals of the Men’s Doubles draw.
DOUBLES RECAP
Vasco Prata and Ivan Dreycopp earned a bye in the round of 16 in the Men’s Doubles draw, which allowed the pair to skip the play on Thursday and head straight for the quarterfinals on Friday morning. In the Quarters, Prata and Dreycopp matched up against Tulane’s Daniel Philips and Hady El Kordy, where the Niners took the victory 8-4.
Saturday morning, the pair was back in action, this time against a pair from Wichita State consisting of Ilias Hirani Worthington and Alejandro Jacome. Prata and Dreycopp managed to secure their spot in the finals in a close match, ultimately winning in straight sets, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (3).
The pair was in action one final time on Sunday morning where Prata had the chance to earn the title for his second year in a row, but ultimately the Niners fell just short, dropping in three sets to the pair of Petro Kuzmenok and Santiago Navarro from Rice, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (7), [10]-[5].
“Ivan and Vasco showed grit and courage throughout their doubles run,” said Charlotte Men’s Tennis Assistant Coach Bastien Huon. “They fought back from a set and two double breaks down in the final, staying aggressive and believing in themselves. We fell short but came home with lots of motivation that we can make something happen.”
SINGLES RECAP
Prata (7 Seed) and Dreycopp (8 Seed) also competed in the Men’s Singles draw, where both earned a first-round bye. Prata’s singles run ended in the Round of 16, where he fell to 10-seeded Guglielmo Verdese from South Florida, 3-6, 6-7 (5). Dreycopp managed to make it to the Quarters, beating nine-seeded Victor Tosetto from Tulsa, 6-4, 7-5, before dropping to Memphis’ Marcos Castro Fabra, 3-6, 2-6.
“In singles, Ivan took out one of the best players in the conference, proving that he belongs there,” said Coach Huon. “They [Prata and Dreycopp] were both beaten by younger recruits, showing this league is getting stronger and more competitive.”
