FORT WORTH – The Rice women’s tennis team wrapped up the TCU Fall Open with an impressive showing on Sunday, collecting five singles victories and a doubles win to close the weekend on a high note.

The Owls controlled much of singles play, highlighted by straight-set wins from Uma Bakaityte, Francesca Maguina and Valentina Ponce. Bakaityte defeated TCU’s Victoria Gomez 6-3, 7-6, while Maguina followed with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Cristina Ramos. Ponce turned in a dominant performance with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Texas Tech’s Arina Oreshchenkova.

Ema Mravcova and Daniela Chica both battled through three-set matches to add to Rice’s singles success. Mravcova edged Ella Brownback of Texas Tech 7-5, 3-6, 11-9, and Chica outlasted Elena Daskalova 6-2, 6-7 (5), 10-8.

In doubles play, Ponce and Anushka Ashar earned a 7-6 (5) victory over Nebraska’s Tiziana Rossini and Catherine Gagen to wrap up the day.
