In the aftermath of Real Madrid’s 2-1 victory over Barcelona, a remarkable revelation has surfaced as Federico Valverde played the entire El Clásico while battling a fever and gastroenteritis.

According to AS, the Uruguayan midfielder, who started as right-back and wore the captain’s armband, was far from fully fit but insisted on representing his team in one of the most demanding fixtures of the season.

Valverde reportedly began to feel unwell the night before the game, initially showing only mild symptoms.

However, by the morning of the match, his condition had worsened. Despite suffering from fever and stomach discomfort, the Real Madrid star made it clear to Xabi Alonso that he was determined to play.

He assured the coach that he could push through, saying he wanted to be on the pitch regardless of how he felt, and he stayed true to his word.

He did raise an alarm

Just before kick-off, Valverde’s condition raised alarm within the squad. He was visibly sweating and required medicines to manage the fever.

Although the medication helped him endure the first half, it couldn’t completely mask his discomfort.

Still, Valverde fought on, showing his trademark resilience and commitment to the badge.

By half-time, Dani Carvajal began warming up intensely as Valverde continued to complain of feeling “really bad.”

Around the 60th minute, the midfielder fell to the ground and required medical attention. It wasn’t an injury that brought him down, but the toll of playing under such physical strain.

Finally, in the 72nd minute, Valverde looked towards the bench and signalled that he had reached his limit.

Alonso responded immediately, sending on Carvajal to replace him. Despite his exhaustion, Valverde had already fulfilled his duty

His performance, now seen in context, takes on an even greater significance.

Playing El Clasico is a test of endurance at the best of times, but doing so with a fever and gastroenteritis showcases a level of commitment few can match.
