Every year Chicago dyes its river bright green to celebrate St Patrick’s Day in support of the huge Irish population in the city and Canterbury has launched a shirt in honour of the tradition.

Canterbury says the swirling “green water” pattern pays tribute to the city’s Irish heritage while capturing the energy of both Chicago and Irish rugby.

The one-off shirt will be worn as a pre-match kit before the game between Ireland and New Zealand at Soldier Field.

Priced at £55 on the Canterbury website, the kit also comes with a free Ireland bobble hat for every fan who buys the ‘Pro’ version. Fans who want a higher quality option can buy a £105 ‘Test’ version before the game.

The Test option is the one worn by the players and sits close to the body, a sleek, performance-focused fit worn by the pros, with VapoDri technology to keep players dry and comfortable. The Pro version has a slightly looser, athletic feel, still packed with the same VapoDri innovation and finished with the iconic CCC and IRFU logos.

There is also a junior version for younger fans. All three kits are on sale now.

Andrew Porter, Ireland and British & Irish Lions prop, said: “Once again, Canterbury has created a jersey that will not only perform on the pitch but will also look fantastic off it. The special design on this shirt, reflecting the iconic dyed Chicago River, is a great way to celebrate Ireland’s match against New Zealand in Chicago.”

Ireland will take on the All Blacks in Chicago on November 1 in a replay of one of the most historic results in Irish rugby history. It was at this stadium in 2016 that Ireland beat the All Blacks for the first time and they will be hoping for a repeat performance in the opening game of the Autumn Internationals.
