After falling to Taylor 90-71 over the break, the Holy Cross women’s basketball team (0-1) will prepare to face off against crosstown rival Bethel (0-0).
Kicking off the season, the Saints had multiple returners contribute against Taylor despite the loss. Sophomore forward Allie Caldwell led the Saints with 21 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals. Following was sophomore forward Kaiden Hanley, who had 13 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Junior forward Brooke Lindesmith finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and two steals.
The Saints also had two newcomers who made their first appearance against Taylor, including freshman forward Sincere Coleman-Francis, who finished with 14 points, four rebounds and two steals and freshman forward Malea Steele, who finished her first game on the court with six points and two rebounds.
As a whole, the team finished its game shooting 40.7% from the field, totaling 32 rebounds and 15 assists.
Not far away is rival Bethel, which has yet to start its season. Last season, Bethel finished 13-16 and 6-12 in conference, going 9-7 at home and 4-9 at away games.
Last season the two teams faced off against each other and Holy Cross walked away with the 68-53 win.
Holy Cross took the first quarter with a 21-10 lead and stayed ahead in the second quarter, leading 38-21. After the half, the Saints continued to be a powerhouse on the court as they added an additional 20 points to their score for a 58-34 lead. In the final quarter, Bethel was able to make a comeback with 19 points to close the score gap, but 10 points from Holy Cross gave the Saints the final win.
The Holy Cross women’s basketball team will travel to Bethel on Oct. 30 with tip-off set for 6 p.m.
