Bicycle Network turns 50 this year and we’re marking the birthday in Hobart with the screening of the documentary Lael Rides Around the World on Tuesday 11 November.

Join Bicycle Network CEO, Alison McCormack, at the RACV Hobart Hotel from 5.30pm, with the official event starting at 6.30pm.

Members received an email on 28 October with the code to get their $5 tickets, non-members can also attend the screening for $25.

We’ll also have a couple of door prizes for two lucky members: $100 vouchers for our new member benefits partner Cliqit.

While Tasmania has not been part of Bicycle Network for all of the 50 years,  the first Tasmanian cycling advocacy group started in 1977 so the trajectories to today are similar.

The first 65 people through the door will also get a printed copy of Ride On magazine, which includes Tasmania’s history of bicycle advocacy.

RACV Hotel is located at 154–156 Collins Street, Hobart. We’ll have a few nibbles available from 5.30pm but official proceedings kick off at 6.30pm.

Lael Rides Around the World

In 2024, Alaskan endurance rider Lael Wilcox set a new world record for circumnavigation of the earth by bicycle. For 108 days, 12 hours and 12 minutes she rode, joined by friends and fans, with every step documented by photojournalist Rugile Kaladyte.

There are some beautiful scenic vistas and heart-warming moments with locals in each country. One of the loveliest moments is when a couple of excited Aussie families wait by the side of the road in the dark to cheer her on, playing Eye of the Tiger to get in the mood!
