Anatomy of a last-minute Tour call-up

“Bretagne isn’t the easiest place to get to and Ireland isn’t the easiest place to get from.”

Georgie Howe

Billy Idol once said it’s a nice day for a white wedding … until Lidl-Trek call you at 8.30am on July 25, the morning of your friend’s wedding, saying you need to get to Vannes, France for the Grand Depart of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift.

It was Lauretta Hanson of the American outfit who picked up the phone. Her teammate, Amanda Spratt, fell ill and – devastatingly for her – had to withdraw from the fourth edition of this race. Her fellow Australian was then on a plane out of Ireland towards the start line in Vannes, rather than at the wedding ceremony.

Apart from press commitments and a pre-race meeting, riders usually get a fairly low-key run into the Tour de France Femmes. A shake-out ride, a massage, feet up. Hanson didn’t have such a luxury, “Here in Bretagne, it’s not the easiest place to get to and Ireland isn’t the easiest place to get from,” she told Escape. “So I had a long travel day yesterday, but I’m happy to be here and looking forward to my second Tour.”
