A match-winning display with the ball from Josh Hazlewood has given Australia a 1-0 lead over India in their T20 international series.
Australia bowled India out for just 125 in 18.4 overs, before going into the bat themselves and chasing down their target in just 13.2 overs.
Hazlewood set the tone from the start, bowling all four of his overs inside the first seven of the match, and taking impressive figures of 3-13.
The series will head to Hobart on Sunday, before two matches in Queensland will decide an outcome.

Australia vs. India – 2nd T20I – Updates, commentary, highlights
Player of the Match: No surprises, as Josh Hazlewood is presented with the player of the match award, after collecting figures of 3-13 in the first innings.
13.2 overs: GAME OVER! Marcus Stoinis hits to the off-side and picks up a couple to give Australia the win. A relatively exciting ending for a game that ended with 6.4 overs in hand, thanks to Jasprit Bumrah’s excellence with the ball.
13th over: Boo! No hat-trick for Jasprit Bumrah, as Xavier Bartlett plays some solid defence. Only two runs required for the Aussies.
12.5 overs: WICKET! An absolute peach from Jasprit Bumrah, and he’s on a hat-trick. Welcome back to the side Matt Short! He heads back to the sheds after just one ball.
12.4 overs: WICKET! That was weird. Mitch Owen caught behind off the bowling of Jasprit Bumrah. Umpire looked like he was initially shaking his head no, which prompted Jasprit Bumrah to make the review hand signal. As he was doing that though, the umpire’s finger finally went up.
12th over: Mitch Owen hits a massive six on the final ball of the over, and now Australia just need five runs for the win.
WICKET! The referral finally works in favour of India, and Josh Inglis has to walk.
11.2 overs: We’re going upstairs for another LBW referral. 82,438 is the official attendance for tonight’s “sold out” match.
11th over: A couple of reviews that over, but they don’t fall the way of the Indians, which has been the story of the night for the visitors.
10th over: DROPPED CATCH! A missed chance for India as a dropped catch by Harshit Rana sees Mitch Owen’s time at the crease spared. Just 22 runs needed for Australia with half the runs remaining.
8.4 overs: WICKET! A shockingly short night at the crease for T20 specialist batsman Tim David, who departs for one after just two balls. Caught and bowled, did the in-close fielder get the better of him mentally?
8th over WICKET!: Kuldeep Yadav gets the big wicket of Mitch Marsh on the final ball of the over, but it might be too little, too late, as his celebration – or lack thereof – suggests. 20 runs from the over, all coming from Marsh. Down to the rest of Australia’s batsmen now.
7.3 overs: 4, 6, 4. Mitch Marsh is having too much fun right now. Moves into the 40s, and he could make up the runs himself the way he’s going.
7th over: Marsh clears the boundary again that over, keeping the runs ticking over for Australia.
6th over: Bumrah is able to help calm things down for India, as his over only goes for five. Still a lot of work left to do for the tourists though.
5th over: A successful over for Varun Chakravarthy, as he takes a wicket for a cost of just two runs.
4.3 overs: WICKET! The Spinner gets the break! Varun Chakravarthy comes into the attack, and claims the big wicket of Travis Head, thanks to some terrific fielding along the boundary from Tilak Varma. (AUS 1-51)
4th over: Blink and this game could be over. Mitch Marsh and Travis Head don’t seem to be in the mood to be out there for long.
3.4 overs: This could be over quickly, Travis Head is causing headaches for the Indian bowling attack. Head dispatches Rana for six, before a four off a no ball resulting in a free hit (which, albeit, only goes for one). Then Mitch Marsh gets in on the act, with a MONSTER six that looked effortless.
3rd over: A disastrous night gets worse for India, as Bumrah uncharacteristically bowls nine extras (four byes, five wides), and the total over goes for 18. Nearly claimed the wicket of Mitch Marsh on the last ball, though.
2nd over: Harshit Rana with a decent first over, keeping the Aussie opening pair to just seven despite a boundary. But India will need some wickets to start falling soon.
1st over: No wicket, but a strong start for Jasprit Bumrah. Just four runs from the first.
Australia Innings
Abhishek Sharma was out there for 111 of India’s 112 balls, but he only ended up facing 37 balls himself, which was perhaps more costly for India than all of them getting out. Ultimately they are only able to produce a total score of 125, which puts a lot of pressure on their bowlers.
18.4 overs: WICKET! ALL OUT! A miscommunication and a run out is a rather fitting way to end a horrid innings for India. Jasprit Bumrah taps it down for a quick single, which Varun Chakravarthy doesn’t anticipate, and Nathan Ellis is able to pick up the ball and complete the run out, although Bumrah was officially given out, as the batsmen didn’t cross. India set Australia a score of 126 to chase.
18.3 overs: WICKET! That’s the one Australia wanted. Abhishek Sharma’s night is done, in spite of a referral upstairs. Nathan Ellis claims him LBW. What a knock, he singlehandedly gives India’s bowlers something to work with. (IND 9-125)
18th over: That’s why you need him on strike. Abhishek Sharma faces all six deliveries, and earns India 15 runs as we enter the final two overs. Due to Australia’s slow over rate, they are able to have one less fielder outside the inner circle for the final two overs. The price you pay for taking wickets, I suppose.
17th over: Abhishek Sharma takes a single off the first ball of the over, and doesn’t get back on the strike. He’s now faced only one of the last 18 delivers. That has perhaps been more costly for India than the actual wickets falling.
16.5 overs: WICKET! Marcus Stoinis joins the party, claiming his first wicket on the penultimate ball of his spell. Kuldeep Yadav faces six deliveries, but can’t muster a run. Worrying times if you’re an Indian fan. (IND 8-110)
16th over: Nightmarish over for India, losing two wickets, and for the second over in a row, Abhishek Sharma doesn’t face a ball. They reject a single on the last ball so he can face the start of the 17th.
15.4 overs: WICKET! The wickets are falling in twos tonight, and it’s another great catch by Josh Inglis, who was able to put his first drop of the night in the back of his head to take three catches to date. Shavin Dube hits a four before being forced to walk on just his second ball faced. (IND 7-109)
15.2 overs: WICKET! Harshit Rana’s much-needed knock comes to an end, as he looks to clear the boundary, but can’t get it over Tim David. His 35 runs were massive for India, and Australia will be glad to see the back of him. (IND 6-105)
15th over: Despite not coming out until the eighth over, Harshit Rana has already faced more deliveries than Abhishek Sharma. He looks settled now though, his massive six from the fifth ball of the over is proof of that. With that smash he brings up the 50-run partnership as well.
14th over: Quieter over as Nathan Ellis allows just four runs from it.
13th over: The Indian faithful is starting to gain its voice, finally having something to cheer about. Abhishek Sharma raises the bat for 50, while Harshit Rana finds the boundary as well in that over.
12th over: Abhishek Sharma is closing in a half century, and perhaps more importantly, he’s starting to get some help, with Harshit Rana building as he sits on 17 from 19. India desperately need to get Abhishek more time on strike though. He’s the only one that looks like he can produce runs in a hurry at the moment.
11th over: First taste of spin action tonight with Matt Kuhnemann entering the attack, and fortunately for Australia Abhishek Sharma wasn’t able to face a single ball. Harshit Rana produces five runs from it, with a cut shot splitting the gap and rolling to the boundary the highlight.
10th over: Mitch Owen’s first over is an expensive one. Most comfortable a pair of Indian batsmen have looked all night. At the halfway mark, India are 5-69.
9th over: India get through the ninth unscathed, despite a potential run out on the fourth ball, and Harshit Rana top edging the fifth delivery between fielders.
8th over: An eventful over ends with India at 5-50. Australia have done well dismissing most of India’s top order, as well as keeping Abhishek Sharma off strike. Despite Abhishek accumulating 34 runs, he’s only faced 13 of a possible 48 balls.
7.3 overs: WICKET! Drama here, and India have thrown away a wicket to a miscommunication with a run out ensuing. Fortunately it’s not the danger man, but Axar Patel has to depart prematurely for just seven runs. (IND 5-49)
7th over: Australia rush through Josh Hazlewood’s overs, and it pays dividends, as he takes an impressive 3-13 from four overs. His night with the ball is done, much to the relief of the Indians you’d assume.
6th over: Where would India be without Abhishek Sharma right now? He opens up his body to find a four on the off-side, and moves to 29 runs. India produce 4-40 in the powerplay, and the strict fielding restrictions on Australia are lifted.
5th over: Axar Patel is the new man at the crease, and finds a single on the last ball. An absolutely devastating over for India, who are now in big, big trouble. The good news is Josh Hazlewood only has more over to bowl.
4.5 overs: WICKET! Tilak Varma lasts two balls, and he’s gone for a duck. Same form of dismissal as Suryakumar Yadav, caught Inglis, bowled Hazlewood. Hazlewood has three early! (IND 4-32)
4.3 overs: WICKET! If at first you don’t succeed, try again. Josh Inglis won’t drop two in a row, and this time Suryakumar Yadav has to walk, after knicking Hazlewood’s ball through to the keeper. (IND 3-32)
4.2 overs: DROPPED! Josh Inglis juggles the ball behind the stumps, sparing Suryakumar Yadav’s time at the crease.
4th over: A couple of boundaries from Abhishek Sharma makes the over somewhat more respectable for India, but the tourists are in some trouble early with two men in the shed.
3.3 overs: WICKET! We’ve gone upstairs again, but this time the decision favours Australia. An absolute peach from Nathan Ellis makes it a quick night at the crease for Sanju Samson. (IND 2-23)
3rd over: Sanju Samson batting higher up the order, and sees out the over.
2.4 overs: WICKET! This time! Josh Hazlewood gets his man, and there’s no overturning this one. Shubman Gill finally has to walk, having only produced five runs from 10 balls. Hazlewood goes full, and Gill pops it up for Mitch Marsh. (IND 1-20)
2nd over: SIX! With the way Abhishek Sharma has come out firing out of the gates, there could be plenty of chances for crowd catches tonight. Our first six to of the night to end the second over. Expensive first over for Xavier Barlett.
1.4 overs: Xavier Bartlett goes full, and is punished by Abhishek Sharma, who is looking to go huge early. Our first boundary of the night.
1st over: Very tight bowling from Josh Hazelwood to begin the match. Shubman Gill takes all six balls to get off the mark, and we are 0-1 after the first.
0.1 overs: WICKET! OVERTURNED! The umpire’s finger went up, and everyone thought in the crowd thought Shubman Gill was out in the first ball of the match. But India reviewed, and DRS showed Josh Hazlewood’s delivery was going down leg and too high – way too high.
India Innings
7:15pm: Josh Hazlewood will open the bowling for Australia. We are just about underway.
7:08pm: Both teams taking part in a moment of silence for Ben Austin, the teenager who tragically lost his life at cricket training this week. A touching tribute.
7:05pm: India will bat first again, meaning we will likely see Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill open the batting. Sharma made 19 off 14 in the first match, while Gill was not out on 37 off 20.
6:47pm: THE STREAK CONTINUES! India have lost yet another toss, with Australian captain Mitch Marsh electing to bowl and sending them into bat. India’s side remains unchanged, while Australia are bringing Matt Short in to replace Josh Philippe.
Surface looks good.
6:40pm: There will be a few less trick-or-treaters in Melbourne tonight between the 90,000+ people expected at the MCG for tonight’s game, and the sold out crowd for Oasis’ performance at Marvel Stadium. Tonight’s match was officially sold out today, Cricket Australia’s official X account confirmed (with a graphic ironically full of empty seats).
Full house on a Friday night! 🏟️

6:30pm: We’re still awaiting a teams announcement, but should have one shortly. Hard to imagine much would’ve changed in the last two days, especially after a washed out game. Likely will be some movement for game three of this series though, with Glenn Maxwell due to be back.
6:15pm: All weather reports suggest the skies will be clear for tonight’s match, which is good news after the disappointing start to this series. Both sides should get to bat their full 20 overs.
6:00pm (AEDT): We are gearing up for the second T20 international between Australia and India at the MCG. It’s a special occasion with Halloween tonight, let’s hope we are in for a treat and the skies stay clear…

Matt Short is the only change, as he replaces Josh Philippe in Australia’s side.
Josh Inglis returned to the playing XI in the first T20I after missing the last two series for Australia with a calf strain; he will retain his place as the wicket-keeper batter.
Glenn Maxwell will miss the second match of the series, expected to join the side for the third game in Hobart.
Adam Zampa is expected to miss the entire T20I series due to paternity reasons; leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha has been called into Australia’s squad. However, Matthew Kuhnemann started in the opening T20I game; he will retain his spot for the second game. One of the key pacers of the Australian bowling unit, Ben Dwarshuis, has been ruled out for the opening three T20Is due to a calf issue.
On the bowling front, Josh Hazlewood and Xavier Bartlett spearheaded the attack in Canberra alongside Nathan Ellis. The trio is likely to be seen at the MCG as well.
Australia XI: Mitch Marsh (c), Travis Head, Josh Inglis (wk), Matt Short, Tim David, Mitch Owen, Marcus Stoinis, Nathan Ellis, Matthew Kuhnemann, Xavier Bartlett, Josh Hazlewood.
The destructive left-right opening duo of Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill continue to open the innings for the team, while Suryakumar Yadav will bat at number 3.
Suryakumar Yadav, who had not been at his best before coming into this T20I series, scored a solid knock in Canberra before the match was called off.
Following their successful Asia Cup campaign, they opted for a heavy spin attack comprising Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, and Varun Chakravarthy in the tournament. The trio retained their places in Canberra, and they are expected to be in the starting lineup in the MCG match.
Meanwhile, Nitish Kumar Reddy has been ruled out from the next two games due to neck spasms, which have affected his recovery. Shivam Dube will continue to keep his spot as the only pace bowling all-rounder in the team.
India opted for a strategic move in the first match; they dropped their star left-arm bowler Arshdeep Singh for Harshit Rana after his heroic performance in the last ODI match. While Rana is likely to retain his spot, Jasprit Bumrah will spearhead the bowling attack.
India will remain unchanged.
India XI: Suryakumar Yadav (c), Shubman Gill, Tilak Varma, Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wk), Axar Patel, Harshit Rana, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy, Shivam Dube, Jasprit Bumrah.
