Casio tributes Back to the Future with a special edition of the watch Marty McFly wore in the iconic 80s film trilogy.
It features a DeLorean time machine-themed display and a caseback engraved with its flux capacitor.
The watch comes packaged in a VHS cassette tape-inspired box and outer sleeve.
When you think about movie-famous watches, a few examples immediately come to mind: the Hamilton Khaki Field Murph from Interstellar, Steve McQueen’s Heuer Monaco in Le Mans, Tom Cruise’s Porsche Design Chronograph One in Top Gun, the Seiko H558-5000 worn by Arnold Schwarzenegger in Commando and Predator, and of course, all the watches worn by James Bond, especially his Omega Seamasters… The most affordable yet no less famous ‘movie watch’ of them all, however, has to be the Casio CA-50 and CA-53 calculator watches worn by Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly in the Back to the Future trilogy.
For a trio of movies that serve science fiction thrills and nostalgia in equal measure, the high-tech (for the time) calculator watch was the perfect prop. These days, they’re a total 80s throwback, proving that we’re always going back to the future… Anyway, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first Back to the Future film, Casio has released a special edition take on its CA-series calculator watch that unashamedly leans into its 80s origins.
Unlike the watches worn by Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly in the films, which featured black resin cases, this special edition CA-500WEBF-1A features a chrome-plated resin case meant to emulate the DeLorean DMC-12 time machine car created by Doc Brown that’s central to the trilogy’s plot, with the single-link stainless steel bracelet particularly evoking the car’s distinctive exterior.
The DeLorean references don’t stop there, though: the display features a shroud reading “OUTATIME since 1985”, referencing the DeLorean’s number plate, as well as seven-segment display graphics emulating the time circuits used to set future or past dates in the time machine. The caseback also features an engraving of the DeLorean’s “flux capacitor”, while the bracelet’s clasp has a Back to the Future logo engraving, too. This Casio even comes packaged in a VHS cassette tape-inspired box and outer sleeve for peak 80s vibes.
As for its functionality, it utilises Casio’s 3558 digital quartz module, which has been in production since the 80s (if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it) and features the typical litany of digital Casio features alongside its main calculator function, including dual time displays, a stopwatch and a full auto calendar until the year 2099.
Closing thoughts
While a bit more expensive than your average Casio CA-53W-1, this special edition still ranks as one of the most affordable ways to get a Hollywood-famous watch on your wrist. I also like that Casio hasn’t gone completely overboard with the watch’s design: fans of the movie will appreciate the nods to the DeLorean, but it’s not so cheesy that you’d feel self-conscious wearing this in less casual settings.
