A former diplomat who worked on Australia’s bid for the 2026 United Nations climate change summit warns that hosting the event is risky and could expose the nation to increased demands to reduce coal and gas exports.
The warning came as the federal government continued to send mixed signals about its level of enthusiasm to host the summit in Adelaide and South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas revealed that he had bought a refundable ticket and would travel to Brazil next week for the 2025 summit if it could help secure the bid.
