Actor Tchéky Karyo, who appeared in numerous major films, including “GoldenEye,” “La Femme Nikita” and “Bad Boys,” has died at the age of 72.

TMZ reports that Karyo’s family members say the actor died Friday of cancer.

According to his IMDb.com biography, Karyo was born in Istanbul, Turkey, on Oct. 4, 1953. He grew up in Paris, France, where he studied drama at the Cyrano Theatre. He eventually became a member of the Daniel Sorano Company and the National Theatre of Strasbourg.

“We are so sad to learn of the passing of Tchéky Karyo,” Lindsay Salt, director of BBC Drama, tells the BBC. “He was a truly brilliant and much loved actor and he will be fondly remembered by BBC viewers for his roles in ‘The Missing,’ ‘Baptiste’ and most recently ‘Boat Story.’ Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this time.”

Among his many roles, Karyo was a villain opposite Will Smith and Martin Lawrence in “Bad Boys” and also was an adversary of Jet Li in “Kiss of the Dragon,” Variety reports. He also played a French officer in the Mel Gibson film “The Patriot” and a Russian defense minister in the Bond film “GoldenEye.”
