The early reports are that the Chris Waller-trained Buckaroo is OK after the gelding was eased up by his rider at the 300 metre mark of the Melbourne Cup.

Buckaroo finished a lengthy last in the race that stops the nation after jockey Craig Williams stopped riding the horse and took care of him over the concluding stages of the race.

At the time Williams detected an issue, Buckaroo was in the second half of the field and close to the middle of the track, about eight lengths off the leader.

Racing Victoria gave a Buckaroo update on social media, with racing journalist Andrew Hawkins reacting to the news.

While not ideal, EIPH is quite common in racehorses and they generally recover quickly.

The stable also indicated post-race that the horse didn’t handle the 3200 metres.

Racing Victoria stewards also gave updates on two other horses, including race favourite Presage Nocturne.
