Welcome

Good morning folks, welcome to the Gold Coast where chairman of selectors George Bailey is set to announce the Australia squad for the first Ashes Test in Perth.

We’ll bring you all the details as and when Bailey gets up and starts talking, which we are expecting to happen at 11:00am AEST (midday AEDT).

Skipper Pat Cummins has already been ruled out of contention due to a back injury, with Steve Smith set to captain the side.

Cummins said he hopes to be fit in time for the second Test in Brisbane on December 4.

England named its 16-man squad for the Ashes tour in September, led by Ben Stokes and a battery of injury-prone fast bowlers including Jofra Archer and Mark Wood.

The Ashes gets underway at Perth Stadium on November 21, followed by Tests in Brisbane (December 4-8), Adelaide (December 17-21), Melbourne (December 26-30) and Sydney (January 4-8).

Australia has never played England in a Test match at Perth Stadium but has an overall record of four wins and one defeat in its five Tests at the venue since 2018.

England has only ever won a single Test in 14 attempts in Perth, a 166-run victory at the W.A.C.A. in 1978.

Australia has been victorious on 10 occasions in Western Australia against the English, with three draws.

England have not won a Test match on Australian soil since 2011.

England’s Ashes squad: Ben Stokes (c), Harry Brook (vc), Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Brydon Carse, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Ollie Pope, Matthew Potts, Joe Root, Jamie Smith (wk), Josh Tongue, Mark Wood.
