Dayot Upamecano has reportedly reached a verbal agreement to sign for Spanish heavyweights Real Madrid. The development comes on the day that Bayern Munich director of sport Max Eberl suggested the defender’s agent is fielding calls from interested parties.

The centre-back has been linked with a move to Liverpool in recent months after the Reds missed out on Marc Guehi during the summer transfer window. A £35million move to Anfield for the England defender collapsed on deadline day when Crystal Palace chairman, Steve Parish, pulled the plug on the deal.

Upamecano is a name that has been mentioned in recent months as a possible alternative to Guehi, who is set to become a free agent at the end of this season.

But according to Foot Mercato, the France international has verbally agreed to join Los Blancos next summer.

The centre-back’s current deal expires at the end of the campaign, meaning that he could leave on a free transfer after five years with Bayern Munich.

And Eberl has admitted: “It’s normal if other clubs are calling his agents, it’s part of the game. I’ve already said that we want to do our best and get new contract done. We are on it.”

Liverpool overcame Real Madrid in the Champions League at Anfield on Tuesday night.

Alexis Mac Allister scored the only goal of the game after 61 minutes with a header from Dominik Szoboszlai’s pin-point free-kick.

Trent Alexander-Arnold came on as a late substitute to a storm of booing from Liverpool’s supporters.

Speaking after the game, head coach Arne Slot said: “Impressive, because we played against an incredible side, a team that is in an unbelievable run of form – only lost once, won all the other games.

“If you then can win against them, but also with the performance we had, that’s very positive. But apart from everything we can say, we beat them because of a set-piece.

“It’s nicer to talk about this if you win because if you lose, people come up with that I try to find excuses.

“But a positive set-piece balance is the minimum you need to get a result nine out of 10 times, and that’s what we had today.”
