Shai stays consistent

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander brings a special scoring streak into Portland to face the Trail Blazers tonight.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander leads the 8-0 Thunder to face the Portland Trail Blazers tonight, building on a near-unprecedented streak of scoring consistency.
He’s looking for his 81st consecutive game with 20+ points, trailing only Wilt Chamberlain. The Big Dipper did it twice – over 60 years ago – putting up 126 games of scoring brilliance from 1961-63 and 92 from ‘63-64.
SGA showed off his bag against the Clippers last night.
He’s almost impossible to knock off balance, all hips and elbows with surprising core strength. He always has an angle to get off a shot, with his trusty step back as the ultimate counter.
He’s never hurried, always a threat, and always working. Just look at him move, grooving in hops and starts and smooth transitions. No one’s harder to keep out of the lane.
Plus, if you bring a double, he brings the vision of an elite point guard, following in the footsteps of his fellow Kentucky alums like Rajon Rondo and John Wall.
He’s averaging a career-high 33.1 ppg and shooting a career-best 61.3 percent from two-point range. He’s at his customary 90 percent from the line, and the three-ball isn’t even really falling yet, at 32.1 percent.
It’s skill deployed with algebraic efficiency and ceaseless creativity.
“I just put in the work. I take care of my body. I get enough rest, and I do it all over again,” Gilgeous-Alexander said of his consistency after last night’s win. “I found a formula that works for me, and I try to hammer it home.”

Welcome to an 11-game night in the NBA!

Luka Dončić and the Lakers take on the San Antonio Spurs tonight on ESPN.
We’ve got an ESPN doubleheader for you tonight, headlined by Luka Dončić and the Los Angeles Lakers traveling to San Antonio to take on Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs (10 ET).
It’s two of the top players in the Association and two teams playing at the top of their games. Let’s dive in.
Dončić is averaging a cool 41.3 ppg so far on the young season, shooting 55 percent from the field, including a sterling 78 percent mark from two-point range. He’s also pulling down 11.5 rebounds and dishing out 8.3 assists.
Along with Austin Reaves (31.1 ppg, 9.3 ast), who is out tonight, Luka’s served as the fulcrum for a talented crew of veteran role players, including Deandre Ayton, Marcus Smart Rui Hachimura and Jake LaRavia.
The Lakers have posted a +3.1 net rating so far this season, good for ninth in the Association.
They’re tops in field goal percentage (52.8 percent), fifth in offensive rating (117.7) and third in points in the paint (57.3).
But they haven’t faced a force around the rim like Victor Wembanyama.
Wembanyama (26.7 ppg, 13.7 reb, 4.7 blk) is a singular presence in the post, blocking and making shots with an awe-inspiring 8-foot wingspan. Can he bother Luka’s float game? Can Ayton and Jared Vanderbilt, both mobile pivots, slow him down?
The Spurs have run out to a 5-1 start and the fourth-best net rating in the league at +8.8 behind Wemby.
He’s received help along the way from second-year guard Stephon Castle (20.0 ppg) and Dylan Harper (14.0 ppg, fifth on the latest Kia Rookie Ladder), both of whom are talented, athletic slashers.
It’s a special matchup tonight.
In the opening game on ESPN, we’ve got the Timberwolves and the Knicks (7:30 ET), as former Knicks star Julius Randle leads Minnesota into Madison Square Garden to face Karl-Anthony Towns and New York.
Lock in for a great night of NBA action.
