While San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said earlier this week that quarterback Brock Purdy is “getting closer” to returning, Shanahan told reporters Friday that Mac Jones will remain the team’s starter Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams.

Purdy, who hasn’t played since Week 4 after aggravating his toe injury, is listed as “questionable” for the NFC West clash. Shanahan noted, however, that Purdy could be active against the Rams.

“I think we’re definitely being more aggressive with him as we go this week, more aggressive than last week,” Shanahan said Thursday, via David Bonilla of 49erswebzone.com. “He’s definitely getting better each week, heading in the right direction. … Brock’s definitely getting closer.”

Shanahan added in that midweek interview with KNBR that he’s “pretty confident” Purdy will return sometime this season.

There is some good news on Jayden Daniels’ elbow. The Washington Commanders quarterback will not need surgery after an MRI revealed that he does not have any ligament damage in the elbow.

Daniels will not be placed on injured reserve, which would have ruled him out for at least an additional four weeks. The Commanders will re-evaluate the second-year quarterback following the team’s bye in Week 12.

Multiple medical opinions were sought and the Commanders believe Daniels, who is reportedly “feeling a little sore,” could possibly return at some point this season.

Daniels was injured during Sunday night’s loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Afterward, head coach Dan Quinn said the elbow was not broken, but was unsure of a timeline for return.

Other notable Week 10 injuries:

Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud will miss Week 10 after suffering a concussion last week against the Denver Broncos. Davis Mills will start in his place against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Saquon Barkley returned to practice with the Philadelphia Eagles after suffering a groin injury against the New York Giants in Week 8. Barkley sat out the remainder of that game as a precaution and had an extra week of rest with the Eagles on a bye last week. Head coach Nick Sirianni didn’t give an update on the running back’s Week 10 status, instead deferring to the team’s injury report when it’s released on Friday.

Also back from their bye week are the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who will not have the duo of running back Bucky Irving and wide receiver Chris Godwin Jr. for another week. Neither player practiced this week and they were ruled out Friday by head coach Todd Bowles. Godwin has missed three games with a fibula injury, while Irving has sat out four games as he deals with foot and shoulder injuries.

After missing Philadelphia’s Week 8 win over the Giants with a hamstring injury, Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown said he expects to play Monday night against the Green Bay Packers.

That’s Jones, who is 5-2 in his seven starts for the Niners this year.

Las Vegas is making a change after an ugly 10-7 loss to the Broncos on Thursday. The Raiders have reportedly fired Special Teams Coordinator Tom McMahon, per NFL Network.

It was a rough night overall for Las Vegas, as quarterback Geno Smith took six sacks in all, and the team went seven consecutive possessions without a first down. Special teams itself wasn’t exactly the only issue, but McMahon was seen having an exchange with head coach Pete Carroll on the sideline during the loss.

Buffalo Bills running back James Cook is no longer on the injury report. He was previously listed with an ankle injury.

That means he’s good to go for Sunday’s road game against the Miami Dolphins.

Cook has crossed the century mark on the ground in five games this season.

The Jacksonville Jaguars added former Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Jakobi Meyers at the trade deadline, and good thing they did because they’ll be down top target Brian Thomas Jr. Sunday during a pivotal AFC South showdown with the Houston Texans.

Thomas, whose production has dipped in Year 2, will be sidelined with a high ankle sprain, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The Los Angeles Rams will replace the struggling Joshua Karty with Harrison Mevis this weekend against the San Francisco 49ers, according to head coach Sean McVay, who clarified to reporters Friday that Karty is “not going anywhere.”

Karty has missed more field goal and extra point attempts this season than any kicker in the league, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Mevis, who is listed at 245 pounds on the Rams’ roster, earned the nickname “Thiccer Kicker” at Missouri, where he became a first-team All-American in 2021.

Shedeur Sanders will return to his role as Dillon Gabriel’s backup for Sunday’s game against the Jets.

The Browns quarterback sat out their Week 9 loss to the Patriots with tightness in his back. Following their bye last week, Sanders resumed practicing this past Wednesday.

The Indianapolis Colts announced Friday that they have placed defensive tackle DeForest Buckner on injured reserve with a neck injury.

Now that Buckner is on IR, he will have to miss a minimum of four games. The three-time Pro Bowler sustained the injury during a Week 9 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to Colts head coach Shane Steichen.

Daniels suffered a dislocated elbow during last week’s loss to the Seahawks. The Commanders have yet to announce any sort of timeline for a return or if he will play again this season.

According to ESPN’s John Keim, Daniels will not need surgery on the elbow and is only “feeling a little sore.”

The Commanders have their bye in Week 12 after playing the Lions this week and the Dolphins next Sunday.
