The UNO men’s basketball team delivered an upset win over TCU on the road to begin the regular season and returned to New Orleans on Saturday for an exhibition game against SUNO.
UNO scored points early and often in the scrimmage that was accompanied by homecoming festivities at Lakefront Arena. Enough of a lead was built up for all 15 players on UNO’s roster to see minutes on the floor in a 115-73 win over SUNO.
All but one of the 15 UNO players scored in the 43-point win over SUNO. UNO shot 57.5% from the field and 50% from the 3-point line with a total of 15 made 3-pointers.
“We were able to get some guys in early, get them some good work and then get them out,” UNO coach Stacy Hollowell said. “We played our whole roster, and I thought those guys played hard down the stretch. We’ve got a lot of guys that can really shoot the ball. When the whole crew gets going, it’s going to be fun to watch.”
Texas State transfer Coleton Benson was UNO’s lead scorer with 18 points in just 13 minutes. He shot 5 of 7 from the field, with all five made shots being 3-pointers.
Benson led UNO with 22 points in the season-opening win. He sat out the second half against SUNO after playing a game-high 37 minutes on Monday against TCU.
“We wanted to come out and get going early and get a good lead,” Benson said. “I just wanted to be more efficient today. Felt like I wasn’t too efficient last game. I just wanted to clean that up a little bit, and I was able to.”
Guards Jakevion Buckley, TJ Cope and Irish Coquia each made a pair of 3-pointers for UNO on Saturday. Cope finished second on the team with 17 points on 7 of 9 shooting and threw down multiple dunks.
Senior guard Grant Kemp was one of several UNO reserves to get significant playing time in the second half. One of two returning players from last year, Kemp dished out a team-high 9 assists along with 6 points, 3 steals and a block.
“We put in a lot of work and had a great group of guys that actually bought in this year,” Kemp said. “Whenever I get my name called, I’m ready to go.”
Churchill Abass led UNO post players with 13 points on 4 of 5 shooting and had a team-high 3 blocks. 7-foot-4 center Mathok Majok scored 7 points and had multiple dunks.
Five SUNO players scored in double figures against UNO, with Donte Briggs the lead scorer with 15 points on 5 of 11 shooting. SUNO’s top scorer on the season Jamal Gibson didn’t play on Saturday.
“Obviously I’d like (SUNO’s) score to be a little bit lower,” Hollowell said. “We played a style of play that we don’t normally play. It was good to get some conditioning in there and get up and down and press and just kind of see what our press looked like.”
Next up for UNO (1-0) is a trip to Baton Rouge to face LSU (1-0) at the Maravich Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 10.
