The cost of hosting next year’s United Nations climate change summit could reach $2 billion, with new estimates showing the price so far of $1.3 billion does not include the associated gathering of world leaders and any new climate initiatives the government will announce.

The new cost estimate, confirmed by two separate sources familiar with deliberations, came as it also emerged that Adelaide, the chosen city for the Conference of the Parties (COP31) bid, lacks sufficient capacity to host the leaders’ meeting.
