The long explanation: There are still a lot of scenarios in the American, but if I had to pick one, I’d expect South Florida, North Texas and Tulane to finish tied for first with one conference loss. Somebody gets left out of the conference championship. As I read the tiebreakers, it’s possible, if not highly likely, that CFP standings come into the picture; the committee’s top team is in the title game if it wins its regular-season finale. A G5/6 team isn’t getting in the bracket unless it wins its conference, and it has to get in the title game first.

The short explanation: Keep an eye on which G5/6 team is included because it could have an actual, on-field impact on the conference title race in the American.
