With a second-quarter pick-and-roll assist to center Domantas Sabonis, Sacramento Kings point guard Russell Westbrook recorded his 10,000th career assist, becoming the eighth player in league history to reach the milestone.
The former MVP, triple-double connoisseur and 18-year veteran also became only the second player, behind LeBron James, to reach 10,000 assists while scoring over 25,000 points.
John Stockton, Chris Paul, Jason Kidd, LeBron James, Steve Nash, Mark Jackson and Magic Johnson are the seven playmakers ahead of Westbrook on the all-time assist list — though James is the only one among them as prolific a scorer.
Westbrook has led the league in assists per game three times in his career and led the league in scoring twice. And now, he is 134 assists behind Johnson for seventh place.

In the Kings’ 124-110 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves, Westbrook posted 13 points, 14 assists and 10 rebounds. He is the all-time leader in triple-doubles with 205 and overtook Oscar Robertson in 2021.
Westbrook went on a torrid run of seasons from the mid-2010s to the early 2020s.
In six seasons (split between Oklahoma City, Houston and Washington) between 2015-16 and 2020-21, he averaged double-digit assists and 22-plus points in five of those six seasons.
In four of those seasons, he averaged a triple-double — highlighted by his 2016-17 campaign, when he averaged 31.6 points, 10.7 rebounds and 10.4 assists. That was the first time since Robertson in 1961-62 that a player averaged a triple-double in an entire season. It was the first of three consecutive triple-double seasons for the then-Thunder guard, adding a fourth in 2020-21 for the Wizards.
Westbrook also became the first player since Nate “Tiny” Archibald in 1972-73 to lead the league in both scoring and assists in the same season. He is a nine-time All-Star and nine-time All-NBA selection (first team twice).
Despite his play, however, the Kings are 3-10 this season.
