Following it’s surprise reveal for Nintendo Switch 2 in the September 2025 Nintendo Direct, I was intrigued to know just how the Switch 2 version of Resident Evil Requiem stands up to other versions. While there are obvious changes to the visual fidelity that comes with running the game off less powerful hardware, I was intrigued by what else the game would do with the Switch 2’s unique hardware.

At a recent preview, I had some hands-on time with the game, playing the Sanitarium demo that you’ve no doubt seen around the internet. But I was also able to get some one-on-one time with the producer of the game, Masato Kumazawa, who has previously worked on the Resident Evil 4 remake and Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess.

When I asked Kumazawa-san about if there were any challenges unique to development of the Switch 2, he insisted there wasn’t. On the topic, he said:

“Looking back on Switch, there were Resident Evil games before on the Switch, so what we did, is we used the past experience of developing these games on the Switch to help develop Nintendo Switch 2. But also, we made a lot of versions of the games for PC as well. In fitting with PCs that have a wide variety of specs, we could also just make sure the game was optimised for the Nintendo Switch 2 too. So it wasn’t too hard, so to speak.”

Of course, this lead me to ask if there were any Switch-specific functionality that they could confirm for me. Surprisingly, there was. Kumazawa-san said:

“Actually, we tried really hard to implement mouse controls for Nintendo Switch 2. When we put it in, it confused the gameplay and became too complicated. So actually, we are using gyro instead.”

It’s worth mentioning that while we can assume there will be amiibo support of some kind for the Switch 2 version utilising the brand new Grace Ashcroft amiibo, we still don’t know how this will work.

While the game is less than three months away, a Resident Evil showcase is scheduled for early 2026, which will provide a more detailed look at the game.

Beyond that, we’ll have to wait.

Resident Evil Requiem launches on February 27th 2025 for PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S.
