England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton — who played a key role in her team’s Euro 2025 final win over Spain — has revealed the heartbreak of losing her grandfather.

England wins women’s Euro 2025

England goes back-to-back at the women’s Euro, beating World Cup winners Spain 3-1 in a penalty shootout, despite defender Lucy Bronze admitting post-match that she had been playing on a broken leg throughout.

Hampton was named player of the match after making two saves in England’s 3-1 penalty shoot-out victory in Basel on Monday morning AEST.

It was a performance that capped a brilliant Women’s European Championship campaign from the 24-year-old.

Posting on Instagram alongside a picture of her green England goalkeeper shirt with “grandpa” printed in the neckline, Hampton paid tribute to her late grandfather.

“You were one of my biggest supporters,” Hampton wrote.

“You believed in me before I even knew what this journey would look like. You were always there — watching, encouraging, teaching.

“You taught me so much, not just about football, but about life. About staying grounded, working hard, being resilient and doing things the right way.”

Hampton added: “I hope I made you proud, Grandpa. I carried you through every minute.”
