An Australia Post employee has won widespread praise after going “above and beyond” to fetch a woman’s parcel that had fallen into a suburban street drain.

An impressed Queensland woman shared on social media how the postie accidentally dropped her parcel outside her home on the Sunshine Coast on Friday. She said that instead of simply “driving off”, the worker continued to her property to acknowledge the mistake.

“He apologised and asked for my help as he’d dropped the parcel,” the woman explained, adding that she lent him some tongs to assist in fishing out the package.

“He tried with all his might,” the Queenslander continued. “Flat on his face down in the gutter with his arm down the drain. He was successful.”

Australia Post told Yahoo News it commended the heroic actions of the driver, saying he “thought on his feet to make sure there was a good outcome for the customer”.

The resident said she later offered “huge thanks” to the postie for his honesty, applauding the dedication to her mail. “In true Postman Pat form, he replied that ‘people must get their packages’. A next-level rain, hail or shine moment.”

What started as a single post quickly turned into a viral online moment, attracting more than five thousand responses.

“It’s so nice to read positive stories about people and Australia Post,” a woman said. “Now that’s integrity for you. Well done to this wonderful postman,” another echoed. “[He] deserves a postman award! I hope Australia Post agrees,” said a third.

Australia Post weighs in

While it’s uncertain whether the postie in question will receive any accolades, the company was quick to add its own praise.

“We’ve thanked the postie for his efforts, going above and beyond,” a spokesperson told Yahoo News Australia.

“We’d also like to thank this resident for their kind words and recognition, and for supplying the barbecue tongs that enabled the timely rescue of the package.”

Postie’s quick-thinking after sad roadside discovery

An Australia Post worker was also praised last month for a quick-thinking and life-saving decision made while out on a delivery route this week.

The postie, called Wayne, was delivering letters and parcels across the suburb of Melton South, on the outskirts of Melbourne, when he spotted a grey-headed flying fox on the ground on the side of the road.

On closer inspection, he realised not only was it dead, but a tiny baby was clinging onto its lifeless mother, requiring urgent attention. It’s suspected that the mum was electrocuted to death after coming into contact with powerlines above where she was found. Instead of attempting to handle the vulnerable baby bat, which can be dangerous, he covered the pair with a sturdy box and taped a note to it.
