Nationals MPs have accused the Albanese government of holding a gun to their heads by threatening to strike a deal with the Greens to pass new environment laws, as Treasurer Jim Chalmers appealed to business to pressure the Coalition into supporting Labor’s reforms.
The blunt message from Chalmers to Western Australia’s powerful mining and property sectors came as Environment Minister Murray Watt held talks on the law reforms with senior members of the Coalition and Greens ahead of a potential Senate vote next week.
