Ground Up
After years of trying, Tasmania has finally been given the green light to field a team in the AFL — but there’s a catch. The locals have to build a new stadium, and not everyone thinks the $1.13 billion dollar taxpayer spend is the greatest idea. AFL administrator Hugh Shen (Sam Pang) has been sent from Melbourne, tasked with establishing the club. There’s a divided public to win over, oppressive deadlines to meet, feisty protesters to handle and inoffensive mascots to employ. Oh — and there’s also the small matter of finding the coach and the players, which might lead, eventually, to someone playing football. Should all be a piece of cake.

Shaun Micallef’s Going for Broke
Shaun Micallef has never understood gambling. He uses cold, hard logic when he makes his decisions and always plays for certainty. “Life’s a gamble anyway,” he says. “Why would you go out of your way to risk losing something you already have? Particularly something as important as your money.” Mind you, he said the same thing about alcohol a few years ago in his documentary series Shaun Micallef’s On The Sauce and then this teetotaller spent one episode getting drunk. In Shaun Micallef’s Going for Broke, he turns a sober eye on Australia’s lifelong love affair with gambling. Shaun travels across the country to find out how we became the biggest gambling nation in the world. Are we making a risky bet on our future? And can even Shaun’s rational mind resist the lure of a sure thing?

Tampa: The Boat that Turned the Tide
On its 25th anniversary, this is the explosive story of the 2001 Tampa crisis and its global impact today as the world grapples with a massive migration crisis. The 2001 Tampa crisis was not just a dramatic eight-day showdown at sea that triggered a diplomatic standoff between Canberra, Jakarta and Oslo; its shockwaves continue to reverberate around the world to this day. Alongside the harrowing testimonies of the Tampa survivors — the emotional heart of the series — key eye-witnesses take us inside the decisions that triggered the crisis, put lives at risk and controversially deployed the military. Anchored by the ABC’s Sarah Ferguson, these ‘insiders’ take us behind the scenes to reveal the political machinations and legal manoeuvrings that enabled John Howard to circumvent international law and human rights obligations that Australia had helped forge at the UN Refugee Convention in 1951. But its impact went way beyond that. A quarter of a century later, the Howard government’s handling of the Tampa has become a template adopted and adapted by other global leaders facing the increasingly vexed issue of asylum seekers. Boris Johnson, Rishi Sunak, Viktor Orban, Geert Wilders, Nigel Farage and Donald Trump have all proposed policies that can be traced back to Australia in 2001. This antiimmigration lurch is happening at a time when waves of asylum seekers and refugees — dislocated by wars, civil unrest and climate change — are threatening the stability of Western democracies and undermining the post-WWII order. In short, long before Australia stopped the boats, this was the boat that stopped Australia… and has turned the tide across much of the globe.
Commissioned by the ABC. A Mint Pictures Production. Major production investment from the ABC. Anchored by Sarah Ferguson. Series Producer: Ili Bare. Series Director: Kriv Stenders. Executive Producers: Dan Goldberg, Craig Graham and Sarah Ferguson. ABC Executive Producer: Stephen Oliver. ABC Head Documentary and Specialist: Susie Jones. Worldwide Distribution by ABC Commercial.
The Matter of Facts
Hamish Macdonald wants to know what happens if we lose our faith in facts. We are all navigating a digital ecosystem where truth and lies can be indistinguishable, and where information is created — at scale — to change what we believe, how we behave and who we vote for. Too many of us are reporting that we don’t believe anything — or anyone. To understand why we’re so susceptible to being tricked and scammed with falsehoods, Hamish offers up his own brain. He explores what makes us especially vulnerable to the algorithms of social media which can so effectively land us in echo chambers, where we refuse to consider alternate views. Ten participants join the ride, taking part in a series of social experiments which demonstrate that all of us, no matter how digitally literate, are failing to recognise the difference between true and false. Hamish travels the world to better understand how the march of disinformation is putting holes in our democracies. On the Polish/Belarus border he discovers the human face of a ‘hybrid threat’ and in the Philippines, he meets the new agenda setters ‘reporting’ on the Nation’s ‘free and fair’ elections. Then Hamish heads into the most thrilling and dangerous of all frontiers — where AI is beginning to reshape our images, our communication systems, and the way we interact. From AI psychosis to AI powered disinformation campaigns, Hamish delves into what this technological revolution can do and why so many people believe it’s the most perilous of all human inventions. It’s reckless not to tune in!

The State of Man
The State of Man is a provocative and deeply personal investigation by awardwinning journalist Marc Fennell into what it means to be a man in Australia today.Over three episodes, Marc investigates modern masculinity and the rise of the online “manosphere”, exploring the influence of big tech and the culture wars reshaping how Australian men see themselves. With honesty and empathy, Marc confronts the underlying beliefs, examines the social and technological forces that shape them, and faces his own blind spots as a man and father. It is an unflinching, deeply human look at what happens when identity, power, and belonging are up for grabs. At times shocking and darkly funny, The State of Man invites all Australians to rethink whether society can build healthier models of masculinity — for the sake of all of us.

Gurtha ŋhärana Lullaby with King Stingray
In Gurtha ŋhärana Lullaby with King Stingray, we are in saltwater Yolŋu Country in North-East Arnhem Land, sleeping and dreaming by the campfire. We are listening to the sound of the wind blowing through the casuarina trees and the waves crashing on the beach. All these elements are “singing us to sleep”. The fire is burning, slowly dying. The moon is friendly, coming out in the distance. We are slowly closing our eyes and dreaming of the stars. The visual story of Gurtha ŋhärana Lullaby with King Stingray was directed by Chantelle Murray (Bardi/ Bunial) and produced by Vishus Productions. It follows a mob of Kangaroos huddled around a small campfire, settling down for the night. A restless joey named Rooby stares into the fire unable to sleep. He watches an ember rise and hover in mid-air before transforming into a glowing star. The story depicts the importance of family, closeness and connection to country. It personifies the ‘Gurtha’ or ancestral fire as a cheeky but guiding presence on our way to fall asleep.

Racers must captivate and move audiences with extraordinary, original and imaginative storytelling, using the universal language of video. In a thrilling global adventure where creativity, craft, and character are the currency of success, every film is a chance to stand out — and only the most compelling stories will beat the competition.
Race Around the World is produced by Endemol Shine Australia (a Banijay Entertainment company) for ABC. Endemol Shine Australia Director of Content: Amelia Fisk. ABC Head of Entertainment: Rachel Millar.
