Most Premier League clubs cannot match Newcastle’s reported £130m valuation of Alexander Isak, but Liverpool are among the few who could actually afford the prolific scorer.

The Premier League champions have already spent more than £250m this summer but their income has been boosted this year thanks to several factors, led by the £175m they received in prize money for winning the league.

Last season was also the club’s first full campaign with a higher capacity stadium while a new kit deal with Adidas, which some reports value at £60m per season, will kick in from 1 August.

Combine that with comparatively low transfer spending in previous windows and Liverpool find themselves well within the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules that limit clubs to losses of £105m over three years.

“Having massive global stars come and play at Anfield, filling out stadiums in Hong Kong and Japan, those are things we expect and want to do,” Liverpool chief executive Billy Hogan told the Athletic recently.
